Hisar is the only city of Haryan which is blessed with two universities - the HAU and the GJU. As far as the history of Guru Jambheshwar University is concerned, it is one of the latest universities of the country. It was duly established at Hisar on 20 October, 1995
Ch. CHARAN SINGH HARYANA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY
It was inaugurated on 2 February, 1970, and was named as the Haryana Agricultural Univresity. However, on 8 October 1991, the university was added with the name of Ch. Charan Singh - a great lover of the kisans who had also been the Prime Minister of India from 28 July 1979 to 14 January 1980.

One of the most prominent college of Haryana is Chhaju Ram Memorial Jat College, Hisar. It was established in July 1976. The college was then affiliated to Punjab University(Chandigarh), but in 1974, its afiliation was shifted to Kurukshetra University. By now, the college has risen to Post-Graduate level. The College has now undergraduate classes in all faculties and post-graduate classes in Hindi, Infomation Technology(IT) and Commerce.

DAYANAND COLLEGE is the best centres of the higher education in Haryana. It was established in June 1950, By Lala Gian Chand Mahajan, a well known educationist of the united Punjab and a renowned Arya Samajist of the country.
Moreover the Dayanand College is the only college of Hisar and a select college of Haryana which has been accredited with "B++ grade" by the four member executive committee of the NAAC (National Asessment and Accreditation Council) which inspected the college on 15-17 December 2003.

One of the first women's colleges of united Punjab is Fateh Chand College, Hisar. It was first established at Lahore in 1935, but later shifted to Hisar in 1954 after the vacuum of seven year i.e. from 1947 to 1954.

One of the oldest as well as the best colleges of Haryana is the Government College, Hisar, It is perhaps the only Govt. College of Haryana which was simulataneously opened with another college (D.N. College) at a single station. Established in 1950. Its founder Principal was Sardar G.C. Singh.
